Galway Hookers

"The majestic ruggedness of the work boats of Galway Bay have truly captured my emotions and imagination. These images are among those which will inspire my Paintings and Sculptures in Exhibitions in 2009/2010."

Ian Hill on James G Miles

In a foreword written on the work of James G Miles entitled – “Ships Shapes” Ian recently said:

“James’ working life is dominated and seduced by both the waves’ charm and its power and danger.

It is no wonder that James’ paintings and sculptures are empowered by the almost incalculable powers of the sea.

From their thick impastos of richly textured and coloured paints you can all but taste the very salt of the spray, wipe it’s pearls from sun kissed brow, hear the thump of the wave’s crest on the bow, brace for the shudder of going about under the whack of a soaked and heavy canvas sail, the muscle powered heft of rope and rudder, cleat and anchor.”

Tribute to Ian Hill 1937 - 2010

Ian Hill was a highly respected author and broadcaster. He was also a widely acclaimed critic and indeed, patron of the Arts. I am deeply saddened by his passing. When he wrote his foreword for me, it was as if he had replaced my pallet knife with his pen and recreated my paintings in words which captured the very essence of my art. He was a master of his craft.

In 2007 I had the honour of working closely with Ian when we were commissioned by County Down publishers Cottage Publications to create the book “Lecale – St. Patrick’s County Down.” Words by Ian Hill and paintings by James G Miles.
